Joyce Makinson

We are deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of Joyce.  The funeral arrangements are as follows: there will be a burial on Friday 31st October at the Remembrance Garden near the Strawbury Duck, to be attended by family only.

There will then be a celebration of Joyce’s life in The Barlow main hall from 1pm, open to everyone, followed by refreshments in the Cricket Club from around 1:45pm.

As both a mark of respect and to ease the expected congestion in the Barlow car park, the winter bowling session on the MUGA pitch will not take place and has been postponed.

Please see below tribute from Club Chairman Kerry:

In the last week we have heard of the death of one of the stalwarts of Edgworth Bowling Club.  Joyce was a member of the Bowling club committee, Chair for a number of years and was key to raising money for the club house and the floodlights.  She also captained the team in the Ramsbottom league bringing them much success.  She happened to be a very good bowler; she hit the jack with her bowl more times than any other bowler.  Even when she became less supple, in the words of one top class player, she ”beat me bowling from the hip”.

Her greatest legacy, however, is her ability to inspire and motivate others, for example she organised Friday afternoon bowling sessions for the WI, many of whom became regular bowlers and gained benefit from the social aspects of bowling.

It is true to say that Joyce Makinson was, with Mick Williams and Colin, a driving force in making Edgworth the club it is today.   – Kerry Holt
