Earlier in the year, the Makinson family asked us to resurrect the Rose Bowl competition, in honour of Joyce and Colin, who for a number of years were the heart and soul of Edgworth bowling club. Joyce was singlehandedly responsible for bringing lady members into a previous male dominated club and Colin was key as club secretary in getting us the current clubhouse. Both were keen to involve the local community, with lady WI members being encouraged to join in plus the older primary school children bowling later on Friday afternoons.
The Rose Bowl competition took place today, in the week that Colin sadly passed away, with 16 pairs from Edgworth and other local clubs playing a straight knockout. There was also a consolation competition for first round losers. The event was generously sponsored by Barrie and Deb Makinson, with several club members providing a buffet for all to enjoy.
It was good to see players who had recently joined the club as a result of the Taster days taking part alongside seasoned league players and some of the wider Makinson family.
Winners of the main knockout were our Catherine and Peter Oakes, beating Margaret Corden and Ralph Westwell, from Hoddlesden BC.
Losing Semifinalists were Margaret Whittaker partnered with Malcolm Austin, and Andy Warman partnered with sponsor Deb Makinson.
Winners of the consolation competition were Margaret Booth and Ronnie Howarth from Allen’s Green BC.
